SAND SHARKS SWEEP TWO FROM SHAWNEE STATE

COLLINS' THREE RUN SHOT SEALS VICTORY
HARDEEVILLE, SC-The USCB baseball team ran their latest winning streak to six games with a doubleheader victory over Shawnee State (OH) by scores of 3-1 and 7-6 on Tuesday at the Richard Gray Baseball Complex in Hardeeville. The Sand Sharks two wins give them a 15-6 record entering the series finale on Wednesday.

USCB jumped out quickly to an early lead in game one as RJ Neal, Spencer Jackson and Brandon Cooksey hit for singles after two were out in the first frame. Cooksey's base hit brought home Neal with the first run of the game.

After the visiting Bears tied the contest in the top of the third inning on an rbi double by Adam Wamsley that plated Nick Ball, the Sand Sharks went back on top as Larry Perry doubled and was sacrificed to third by David O'Neil. Neal then hit a grounder to the infield that scored Perry on a throwing error putting USCB on top 2-1.

The Sand Sharks got an insurance run in their half of the sixth frame as Beaufort, SC native Weldon Smith hit a home run over the left field fence for the final run of game one and a 3-1 victory for USCB.

USCB starter Adam Miller pitched the first five innings in game one giving up five hits and one run while striking out four Shawnee hitters. Andres Castro went the final two innings for the Sand Sharks allowing only one hit. Kyle Compton was the losing hurler for the visiting Bears.

The visitors came out looking for revenge in game two as Ball led off the game with a double. Sand Shark starting pitcher Kyle McCullough then issued three consecutive walks, a hit batsman, and a fielder's choice giving Shawnee a 4-0 lead before USCB could even come to the plate.

The Sand Sharks scored a run in the second inning when shortstop Gabe Torres hit his first of two triples of the game and eventually scored on a passed ball.

Shawnee starting pitcher Austin Dunfee seemed in control until with two out in the Sand Sharks sixth frame, USCB came back with one of their patented rallies. With Neal on second after getting on base on a fielder's choice, TJ Kemp singled to drive home Neal. Torres followed with his second triple of the game to score pinch runner Nolan Fuller. Zach Rossetti followed with a ground ball to second base that was misplayed allowing Torres to score with the tying run. DeShontay Berry doubled to move Rossetti to third. Brad Collins, pinch hitting for catcher Clay Bonds, then delivered a line shot over the right centerfield fence for a three run blast to give the Sand Sharks a 7-4 lead.

The visitors would not go quietly though. After two Sand Shark miscues to the first two Bears hitters in the top of the seventh, Shawnee's Zach Byler delivered a two run double to the cut the Sand Shark margin to 7-6. Colton Rudd, who came on to pitch the final frame for USCB, got the next two Shawnee hitters out. Ball then reached on a base on balls putting Shawnee runners on first and third. Shortstop Torres then came up with the defensive gem of the day, backhanding a hard hit ball to his right off the bat of Wamsley, recovering to his feet and throwing to second for the force out that ended the game.

After a shaky first frame, McCullough kept the Sand Sharks in the game for the next three frames. Reliever Ryan Philpott got the win, pitching two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out five Bears. Rudd got the save after completing the final inning.

USCB and Shawnee will conclude the three game series with a single game on Wednesday at the Richard Gray Baseball Complex in Hardeeville at 2:00.
