HARDEEVILLE, SC-The USCB baseball team swept Wednesday's doubleheader against Voorhees College at the Richard Gray Baseball Complex in Hardeeville by scores of 10-3 and 12-2 to run their over-all record to 32-10.
After falling behind 2-0, in the top of the first frame, the Sand Sharks responded for nine runs in their half of the first two innings to go up 9-2. In the first inning for the Sand Sharks, Gabe Torres and Larry Perry both singled.
Brett Wheeler drove home Torres after a Voorhees error. After a walk to
Weldon Smith and a single by DeShontay Berry to load the bases, Blake Sanders hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score another Sand Shark run.
Zach Rossetti, playing his first game in two weeks after undergoing surgery, hit the first pitch he saw from Tiger starter Maurice Ransom for a three run home run to left to give USCB six runs in the first frame.
Spencer Jackson led off the Sand Shark's second with a double. After a walk to Torres, Perry doubled to score Jackson. Wheeler hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate Torres before
Weldon Smith singled to drive home Perry with the Sand Sharks ninth run. USCB would score an additional run in the fourth as Perry doubled for the second time in the game and scored on an rbi single by Smith to end the Sand Sharks scoring.
After giving up the two runs in the first, USCB starter
Jared Campbell settled down and would strike out the side in the second frame.
Andrew Barrineau came on in relief to start the third and went the next three frames to earn the win. Andres Castro finished up on the hill for USCB as the Sand Shark pitchers combined for a three hitter.
USCB continued their torrid hitting to start game two as
David O'Neil and Torres started a rally in the first inning with singles. Brandon Collins doubled both home and later scored on a Wheeler fielder's choice. Torres tacked on another run in the second frame after singling with two outs and scoring on Collin's second double in as many innings.
Sand Shark starter
Jorge Olmo gave up a single and a double to start the top of the fourth. Brandon Maxwell's sacrifice fly plated the first Tiger run. After a Voorhees walk, Olmo was relieved by
Ryan Kroko who gave up a single to Darryl Brown which scored the second and final Voorhees run of the afternoon.
After
Clay Bonds and O'Neil reached base in the bottom of the fourth, Torres got his third hit of the game to bring home two more runs and would later score on a sacrifice fly by Collins.
The game concluded in the bottom of the fifth as nine Sand Sharks came to the plate scoring five runs giving USCB a ten run advantage for the game that ended with the mercy rule.
RJ Neal, Wheeler, and pinch hitter
TJ Kemp had the big hits for USCB in the fifth frame as they also took advantage of four bases on ball and a hit batter.
USCB pitching allowed just six hits as Olmo was credited with win.
The Sand Sharks return to action at home on Friday to start another important Sun Conference series as they will face Northwood University in a 4:00 start. USCB sits in second place in the conference 11/2 game behind leader Embry Riddle. They will conclude the series with the home finale with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday which will be start with Senior Day festivities at 11:30.
