COLUMBIA, SC-The USCB men’s and women’s cross country team opened their 2010 season on Friday night at the Gamecock Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Both teams ran the same five kilometer course which consisted of three identical loops on the parade grounds at Ft. Jackson. The Sand Shark men were defeated by rival SCAD by ten points 25-35 in the NAIA results. Voorhees was third. The USCB women finished in third place behind SCAD and USC Aiken.
Marshall Meyer led the men with an 11th place finish. Meyer, a two time NAIA qualifier in the marathon, ran a time of 16:26. Frank Tinsley, a national cross country qualifier a year ago finished three seconds behind Meyer in the 13th position. Junior Tommy Reeves was the third Sand Shark across the line in a time of 17:13 good for 23rd place. Rounding out the scoring top five were Ian Evans in 31st place in 18:17 and John Stanas who ran 19:27 good for 35th place in the 44 man field.
Junior Selena Hutson led the Lady Sand Sharks with a personal best time of 20:38. Hutson finished in the 31st position. Fourteen second behind was senior Katie Mock in 35th place. The next four USCB runners all finished within 18 seconds of each other as senior Kristy Grannan ran 22:51 leading three first year Sand Sharks across the finish line. Vannica Williams, Caitlin Howe, and Kari Lavoie recorded times of 22:58, 23:05 and 23:09 respectively.
“It was a typical opening meet,” said Head Coach Larry Kimball. “I just kind of look to see what areas are good and what areas we need to work on. I don’t take great stock in the team scores this early as we are looking down the road to Sun Conference Championship in November. Everything to then is a building block.”
The Sand Sharks will next travel to Conway, SC on Friday, September 17th to take place in the Coastal Carolina invitational.
