Bluffton, SC--I wanted to make you aware that Coach Rick Sofield has decided to leave USCB and return to Major League Baseball and coach in the Pittsburg Pirates organization. A very good friend of his, Clint Hurdle, is the general manager of that organization. Coach Sofield's final day at USCB will be November 14, 2011. He is meeting with the players on Wednesday night to notify them of his pending departure. Rick and his wife Elaine will remain residents of our community.
Coach Sofield's contribution to the advancement of this athletic department is immeasurable. He was the right person at the right time for USCB and we will forever be indebted to him for his commitment and the solid footing in which he has helped us get off to. The level of professionalism that he has brought to our institution will be unmatched. I think the mark of any good head coach when they leave is if they can say the program is better off because they were there and in this case, the word “YES” does not say enough.
Assistant Coach Brian Lewallyn will assume the Head Coaching responsibilities for the 2012 season.
We wish Coach Sofield the very best!
