The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team will have strong representation in the Sun Conference All-Star Game on Jan. 21 at Webber International University in Babson Park, Fla., as five Sand Shark seniors were picked to compete in the exhibition.
Left-handed pitchers
Michael Heesch and
Adam Miller, infielders
Gabe Torres and
David O'Neil and outfielder
Ty Main were selected for the game, which will take place at 1 p.m.
Accolades are nothing new for this group.
Miller was named first-team All-Sun Conference in 2010 and has twice been named the conference pitcher of the week. In two seasons at USCB, he is 15-7 with a 4.16 ERA. He is the school's all-time leader in wins, complete games (8), shutouts (3), innings pitched (173) and strikeouts (130).
O'Neil has been one of the most consistent players in the program's short history. A member of the inaugural team in 2009, O'Neil has been named second-team all-conference the past two seasons. A career .341 hitter and a standout defender at third base, he is the school's all-time leader in runs (119).
Torres also has been a consistent force in the middle infield since the inception of the program. A career .377 hitter with 85 RBIs, his .458 batting average in 2010 remains the best in the program's brief history for a player with at least 100 plate appearances, as does his .526 on-base percentage that season. He also holds the school record with 19 career hit by pitches.
Main emerged as a star in his first season with the Sand Sharks last year, earning first-team all-conference honors after he hit .346 with 11 doubles and 18 RBIs. He was hit by a pitch a school-record 12 times and proved to be a disruptive force at the top of the order and an outstanding outfield defender.
Heesch, also a first-year Sand Shark in 2011 after transferring from Illinois-Chicago, went 5-5 with a 3.77 ERA last season and set school records for strikeouts in a season (78) and a game (12) while issuing only 21 walks in 76 1-3 innings.
The Sand Sharks will open their season Jan. 27 at Brewton-Parker, the first of consecutive games against the Barons. USCB will play its home opener against the Barons at 1 p.m. on Jan. 28 at Hardeeville's Richard Gray Baseball Complex.
