Four University of South Carolina Beaufort track & field and cross country athletes were named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.Â
Sprinter Ricky Williams was one of 10 men named to the District 1 team while sprinter Ciera Love and distance runners Claire Kennedy and Meleah Powers took up three of the 12 spots on the women's District 1 squad.Â
The Academic All-District squads are selected by college sports information directors across the nation and are meant to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom. All Academic All-District honorees advance to the ballot for Academic All-America consideration.Â
Williams, a sophomore from Charleston, S.C., set school records in the 60-meter dash (7.10) and 100-meter dash (11.07) this season and also was part of the record-setting 4x200 relay (1:31.95). He also won the 100 meters at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.Â
Kennedy, a sophomore from Columbia, S.C., competed on the soccer and track & field teams for USCB and was named to the Sun Conference All-Academic Team for both. She was a starter for the Sand Shark soccer team in the fall and earned All-Sun Conference honors in track & field as a member of the school record-setting 4x400 relay team taht placed third in the conference.Â
Love, a sophomore from Ladson, S.C., set the school mark in the 100 meters with a time of 13.31 seconds at the Sun Conference Championships. She also was part of the school record-setting 4x100 relay team (51.26) set in 2013.Â
Powers, a junior from Aiken, S.C., competed for both the cross country and track & field teams and was named to the Sun Conference All-Academic Team for both. She finished 30th at the Sun Conference Cross Country Championships (21:15) and was part of the 4x800 relay team that placed fourth at the conference track & field meet.
USCB has now had five athletes named to the Academic All-District squad for men's track & field and cross country — all since 2011— and five honorees for women's track & field and cross country — all in the past two years.Â
In all, eight USCB student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-District honors for the 2013-14 school year. Among South Carolina colleges, only Anderson University and South Carolina had more with nine.Â
